I get gifts off my brownies as a girl guide leader. It’s not expected but it makes you feel appreciated. I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s a personal choice. The issue is it becomes an added pressure especially in areas of high unemployment and deprivation. Then in areas of wealth, it’s turned into a competition. I made my daughters pre-school teachers a gift each, I leave it up to the eldest ones to decide if they want to gift their teachers anything but they keep saying they’re too old for that stuff now. The school should pick a charity each year and only accept donations to the charity.
